Traditional Saudi dessert with creamy cheese filling and aromatic honey drizzle

Freshly baked Saudi Muqshush with golden crust and honey drizzle
"Delicious Saudi Muqshush with creamy cheese, baked golden and drizzled with honey."

Introduction

Saudi Muqshush is a traditional and delicious dessert that captures the rich flavors of Saudi Arabian heritage. This soft, flavorful treat combines creamy cheese filling with a golden crust, finished with a signature honey and spice drizzle.

Perfect for family gatherings, special occasions, or casual visits with neighbors, this recipe is surprisingly easy to make at home. The combination of warm spices and sweet honey creates an unforgettable taste experience that will impress everyone at your table.

Ingredients (US Standard)

Dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 cup warm yogurt
  • 1 tbsp powdered milk
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp instant yeast

Filling & Topping

  • Cream cheese (for filling)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground black lime (loomi)
  • 5 tbsp honey (or to taste)
Measurements are based on US standard cups and spoons. Adjust honey quantity to your preferred sweetness level.

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, warm yogurt, sugar, baking powder, and yeast. Mix well until the yeast fully dissolves and becomes frothy.
  2. Gradually add the flour and powdered milk, kneading until you form a soft, smooth dough that pulls away from the bowl sides.
  3. Cover the dough with a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place for 40 minutes, or until it doubles in size.
  4. Divide the dough into equal-sized balls. Flatten each ball, add a generous spoonful of cream cheese in the center, then carefully seal and shape into smooth rounds.
  5. Arrange the filled dough balls on a parchment-lined baking tray, leaving space between each. Bake using both top and bottom heat until fully cooked and lightly golden (approximately 15-20 minutes at 375°F/190°C).
  6. While still hot from the oven, mix melted butter with honey and Muqshush spices (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black lime). Immediately drizzle over the baked Muqshush and serve warm.
